Scratch: Lesson 6

In this lesson, you will learn how to make a Keyboard Piano that can be played on your computer keys.

You will learn how to:

  • Assign functions to keys on your computer keyboard
  • Import images from your computer

Step 1: Save your Piano Keys

  1. Right click on top of the C key below and click on “Save Image As…”
  2. Save the file in your “Picture” folder on your computer.
  3. Repeat this step until you have downloaded all of the below keys.

Step 2: Import your White Piano Keys to Scratch

  1. Click on the upload button  next to the New Sprite bar NewSpriteBar.
  2. Select the C Key that you saved and it will become a new sprite.
  3. Drag the C key to the far left of The Stageezgif.com-video-to-gif
  4. Repeat Step 1 and 2. Then drag the D key to the far left of The Stage and line it up with the top of the C Key.

  5. Repeat these steps until you have the keys in the following order: C D E F G A B C

Step 3: Import your Black Piano Keys to Scratch

  1. Click on the upload button  next to the New Sprite bar NewSpriteBar.
  2. Select the C# Black Key that you saved and it will become a new sprite.
  3. Drag the C# key to the far left of The Stage and place it in between the first C key and the D key.

  4.  Upload the Eb Black Key and Drag it between the D Key and the E Key.

  5. Upload the F# Black Key and Drag it between the F Key and the G Key.

  6. Upload the G# Black Key and Drag it between the G Key and the A Key.

  7. Upload the Bb Black Key and Drag it between the A Key and the  BKey.

Step 4: Programming The White Keys

  1. Click on the C Key Sprite
  2. From the  Tab grab the whenspacepressed then press the black arrow to change the “Space” to “A.” This ties the C Key to your A key on your computer keyboard
  3. Then go to the sound Tab and drag the playnote onto the Code Table.
  4.  For the C Key you do not need to change the note that this button plays.
  5. For the D Key change the “Space” to “S” and change the playnote to  DKeynote.
  6. Follow the table below to change the white keys to the correct note and bind them to the correct keyboard keys.

Step 5: Programming The Black Keys

  1. Click on the C# Key Sprite
  2. From the  Tab grab the whenspacepressed then press the black arrow to change the “Space” to “W.” This ties the C Key to your W key on your computer keyboard
  3. Then go to the sound Tab and drag the playnote onto the Code Table.
  4. Click on the black arrow next to the “60” and click on the black key between Middle C and D C#KeyNote.
  5. Follow the table below to change the black keys to the correct note and bind them to the correct keyboard keys.
