Intro to Scratch: Lesson 4

In this lesson, you will learn how to animate your name to move, spin, and change colors.

You will learn how to:

  • Change the color of your sprite
  • Change the background of your stage
  • Make your sprite “jump”

Step 1: Choose the first letter of your name

  1. Delete the cat 
  2. Click on the creature’s head underneath the stage view. 
  3. Select the “Letter” folder Letterlibrary
  4. Choose the first letter of your name from the various fonts available.

Step 2: Change the color of your sprite

  1. From the  tab grab the  and drag it to the light gray “Code Table”. The  does whatever is below it when the sprite is clicked instead of when the  is clicked.
  2. In the  tab, grab the changethecolorand connect it to the  on the code table. The changethecolor changes the color of your sprite by a certain amount, this changes the shade of the color and will eventually makes the sprite a different color.
  3. This will change the color of your sprite when you click it.

Step 3: Change the Background

  1. Click the Picture button that is under “New Backdrop” in the bottom left hand corner. 
  2. Pick any background you want and then press the “OK” button. 
  3. Your project will look like this:

  4. Can you remember how to add new sprites? Add the rest of the letters in your name or nickname (4 to 5 letters max).

Step 4: Change the color of all your letters

  1. Drag the block of code we made for the first letter by the to each new letter.

Step 5: Make a letter jump

  1. Pick the letter that you want to “jump”
  2. From the  tab grab the  and drag it to the Code Table.
  3. From the  tab grab the   and drag it to the Code Table.
  4. From the  tab grab the changeyby and connect it inside of the  . Each sprite moves on the x and y coordinate plane, that means that each sprite has an (x,y) coordinate, the changeyby changes only the y so the sprite moves only up and down.
  5. Change the “10” in the changeyby to 20.
  6. From the  tab grab the  and place it under the changeyby.
  7. From the  tab grab the changeyby and connect it underneath the . Change the “10” to “-20”. Since the sprite moves only up and down when traveling on the y axis we must put negative 20 (-20) to move the sprite downward so it returns to it’s original position.
  8. Your code should look like this: 

Step 6:Make a letter spin

  1. Pick the letter that you want to spin
  2. From the  tab grab the  and drag it to the Code Table.
  3. From the  tab grab the   and drag it to the Code Table.
  4. In the  tab grab the  button  and place it in the .
  5. From the  tab grab the  and place it under the . Change the “1” to “0.05” in the .
  6. Your code will look like this: codeblock2
